CHAPTER 10

Aylie awoke before sunrise and hurried to complete her barn chores as quickly as she could. She milked the goats first, storing the cold metal pails of milk temporarily in the barn refrigerator until she had time to take them into the house and empty their contents into more suitable containers for storage. She then proceeded to muck out each of the horse stalls, replaced the straw bedding and restocked all of the hayracks before letting the horses out into the pasture for the morning. She pushed herself, finishing all of her usual tasks in under an hour and a half, as opposed to the two or more hours she typically spent on Saturday morning chores.

She’d found another note from Eli on her locker door the day before and was supposed to meet him at the waterfall right after breakfast. She wanted to make she had time to clean up and shower before breakfast to avoid smelling like hay and horse manure. She’d planned to excuse herself after breakfast under the guise of taking her horse out for much needed exercise. After all, Knight was a very protective horse and would most likely maim anyone or anything that tried to attack her in the woods. She needed all the help she could get these days and it seemed like the most believable excuse for going for a stroll through what was openly acknowledged to be a haunted forest.

Her plan was almost foiled when she announced her intentions at breakfast and her little brother, Sam, began begging to go with her. He’d become a lot clingier as of late, probably sensing the growing distance between them. She’d pulled away from everyone after her induction into The Order for their own protection, but that was something she could never explain without endangering them. Sam was the only innocent one left, the only person in the Bryant family who had any hope of a normal life ahead of him. It was bad enough that they’d lost Lucas to the dark side…she wasn’t willing to risk losing Sam as well.

After several unsuccessful attempts to quell Sam’s desire to go riding with her, she was forced to make up an excuse about going to visit Ryder at the Mansion. Sam pouted, looking more disappointed than she’d ever seen him before. She promised to make it up to him later, but he sulked all the more, refusing to finish his breakfast. He got up from the table and stormed away to his bedroom, slamming the door loudly in angry protest.

Aylie finished her breakfast in guilty silence and nothing more was said about it. She felt her mom’s eyes trained on her face a couple of times and worried for a moment that she might suspect something, but if she did, she was good at hiding her suspicions. Not that this would come as a big surprise. Her mom was good at hiding at lot of things, as it turned out. Her involvement with Rhydian’s Council,
